Are you looking for a weekend getaway in Georgia? This deep southern state on the east coast has a diverse terrain that stretches from sandy island beaches to enchanting hills and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Cities and towns in Georgia can quickly go from metropolitan to quaint and historical. Here is a compilation of five great weekend trip ideas in Georgia.
Atlanta
Often called “The City in the Forest,” Atlanta is quite a large city with its hardwoods left intact. This has resulted in a large canopy of trees that covers much of the city and surrounding areas. It seems that every street is named after a tree of some sort. The result is a metropolis with an abundance of southern charm. On the list of things to do in Atlanta, check out the Buckhead neighborhood for great shopping and dining. Midtown is a mecca for the performing arts. Take in a Broadway-style performance at The Fox Theater. And, don’t miss the Georgia Aquarium downtown – it’s the largest in the western hemisphere.
Peachtree City
If you head south from Atlanta for about 35 minutes you will arrive at Peachtree City, referred to as the Hollywood of the South. This greater Atlanta town is the scene of the film industry’s fastest growing production location. One of the unique features of Peachtree City is the ability to drive all around town in a golf cart. Park your car and rent one to wind around scenic lakes and wooded areas on the 100-mile network of paths designed for walking, cycling, or golf-carting. Another great option is to take the Southern Hollywood Film Tour.
Adairsville
Many of Georgia’s towns are brimming with historical value. Combine a golf getaway, and a peek at Georgia’s past with a weekend trip to Adairsville. Located in the Oothcalooga Valley, not far from the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Adairsville was the state’s first town to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One great option would be to stay at the Barnsley Resort, a 1840s estate five miles outside of town. The option offers cottages, restaurants and numerous outside activities such as horseback riding, fly-fishing, and clay shooting. There is also a Tom Fazio designed golf course.
Savannah
If you are looking for an historic option on Georgia’s coast, Savannah is a popular weekend getaway, from the upbeat riverfront to the idyllic beach on Tybee Island. Travelers to Savannah love the historic walking and trolley tours and sampling the delicious southern food in a variety of eateries. Savannah’s Historic District is still laid out in the squares designed by original settlers since, unlike Atlanta, the town was spared being torched in the Civil War. Hence, many of the original buildings still exist.
St. Simon’s Island
The Golden Isles are about five hours from Atlanta and about an hour south of Savannah. St. Simons, an island about the size of Manhattan, is the most visited of the Golden Isles. It’s loved for its quiet beaches, majestic oaks, and historical landmarks from colonial times. Spend the day on the beach’s golden sand or go biking around the island to visit quaint shops and landmarks like the St. Simons Lighthouse and museum.
